The 1970s, the decade of its founding, will be the theme of Coastline Community College’s 40th-anniversary gala on Saturday in Costa Mesa.

The school, established in 1976, will welcome the public to its “Jewel of Orange County” celebration at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa hotel.

Guests are encouraged to dress in ‘70s attire, and a band will play the decade’s top hits.

Coastline, which belongs to the Costa Mesa-based Coast Community College District, has campuses in Newport Beach, Garden Grove and Westminster and an administration building in Fountain Valley.

“We are proud of Coastline’s accomplishments over the past 40 years,” Mariam Khosravani, the Coastline Foundation executive director, said in a statement. “It’s time to celebrate the forward-thinking, passionate founders and supporters who established Coastline as an innovative academic institution that continues to cater to today’s global student.”

The two-year college has more than 20 academic programs, ranging from psychology to paralegal studies.

Coastline student Roberto Orozco Jr. came to the school in June after serving in the Marine Corps for 16 years. He’s attending Coastline in Newport Beach to check off the classes he needs to apply to medical and nurse practitioner schools.

“To me, everything from the lab space to the student services to the instruction here is on par with other universities,” Orozco said. “The longest I’ve ever stayed in one place is 18 months. Knowing I’ll be here for two years, it feels good to know I have a home.”

Coastline was ranked the No. 1 community college in the United States in 2015 by SmartAsset, a financial planning organization. SmartAsset reviewed hundreds of community colleges, measuring their cost of education and return on investment.

Saturday’s gala will have a cocktail reception and auction from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dinner and entertainment will be from 7 to 11 p.m.

The Hilton is at 3050 Bristol St.
