iHeart Giving Day nets $3.2 million for O.C. nonprofits

The 30-hour iHeartOC Giving Day helped 418 Orange County nonprofits rack up $3,267,248 million, leaving groups in Irvine with $519,405 in donations, Costa Mesa, $196,128 and Newport Beach, $104,376.

The second annual giving marathon, presented by the Orange County Community Foundation, received donations from 9,777 donors between 6 a.m. Wednesday and noon Thursday.

Fifty-four Irvine-based groups benefited. The highest awards went to HomeAid Orange County, $69,515; Cystinosis Research Foundation, $66,825; and JDRF International, $61,950.

In Costa Mesa, 33 organizations benefited, including the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, $52,515; Mika Community Development Corp.,$30,000; and the Youth Employment Service of the Harbor Area Inc., $21,175.

Donations were given to 21 Newport Beach nonprofits, including the Environmental Nature Center, $33,395; Project Access Inc., $26,500; and the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation, $10,200.

“We urged Orange County to ‘give where your heart lives’ during iHeartOC Giving Day and our community went above and beyond in meeting that challenge this year,” Shelley Hoss, the Foundation’s president, said in a statement.

The marathon’s participation Wednesday and Thursday bested last year’s inaugural Giving Day, which had 6,139 donors and raised $1.8 million.
