Around Town: Hoag raises $190,000 at Newport Dunes event

The Hoag Hospital Foundation raised $190,000 at the 2016 Hoag Summer Classic on June 29 at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort in Newport Beach.

“Thanks to our ... underwriters as well as our restaurant partners, who donated all the food and beverages, the 2016 Hoag Summer Classic was an unprecedented success,” Flynn Andrizzi, president of the foundation, said in a statement.

Tennis match in Newport will benefit Irvine charity

Irvine-based HomeAid Orange County will be among the charities benefiting from the Michael Chang Tennis Classic from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club, 2601 Eastbluff Drive.

Players Chang, Justin Gimelstob, Cecil Mamiit and Kei Nishikori will appear in a doubles exhibition match.

Newport Banning Land Trust to present walking tour

The Newport Banning Land Trust plans a walking tour of Banning Ranch from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday that will include a discussion of proposed areas of development on the Newport Beach coastal property and the land that would be preserved as open space.

Senior Symposium scheduled in Newport Beach

Santa Ana-based nonprofit OneOC’s 2016 Senior Symposium invites adults 50 and older for discussions and guest speaker sessions on topics including health, wellness and travel.

The symposium is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Radisson Hotel Newport Beach, 4545 MacArthur Blvd.

Costa Mesa’s Girls Inc. receives $200,000 grant

Costa Mesa-based nonprofit Girls Inc. received $200,000 from the Orange County Community Foundation’s ACT Anaheim initiative.

The initiative, managed by the foundation, was able to provide $1.5 million in grants to 10 nonprofits with support from the Disneyland Resort, Angels Baseball, the Anaheim Ducks, the foundation, ACT’s managing partner and its donors.

CDC to give funds to UCI researchers

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will give UC Irvine and Harvard University researchers up to $6.7 million for their work in preventing hospital-acquired infections.

As part of a national effort focused on slowing the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, UCI and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute are leading a patient safety research program.

“This program is the cornerstone in our national efforts to develop and apply strategies to combat the spread of healthcare-associated infections,” Susan Huang, director of epidemiology and infection prevention at UCI Medical Center, said in a statement.
