Around Town: UCI to start construction on new classroom building

UC Irvine will begin construction this month on a high-tech classroom facility to be named the Anteater Learning Pavilion, with plans to open it by spring 2018.

The facility, consisting of an elliptical two-story structure and a three-story building, will be built next to Steinhaus Hall on campus.

The pavilion will include two lecture halls, classrooms, lounges, offices, audiovisual systems and glass walls.

“A central pillar of our strategic plan is to foster excellence in teaching and learning,” UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman said in a statement. “That commitment is now exemplified in this magnificent building, which will feature lecture halls, impromptu conferencing spaces and the latest technology.”

Newport pub crawl to raise money for Project Access

The 11th annual Newport Beach Santa Pub Crawl on Saturday night will take guests on their choice of two routes while raising money for Orange-based nonprofit Project Access, which provides health, education and employment services to low-income families.

Pub crawl participants can pick up wristbands from 9 to 10 p.m. Saturday at either Newport Landing at the Balboa Pavilion at 503 Edgewater Place or at Woody’s Wharf at 2318 Newport Blvd.

The pub crawl will last until 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Bars on the routes, such as Balboa Saloon and Stag Bar + Kitchen, will offer drink specials to guests wearing wristbands and holiday attire.

Wristbands are available for $15 by Friday and $20 on Saturday.

OCC to host fundraising guitar concert

The music department at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa will host a classical guitar ensemble concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Robert B. Moore Theatre on campus.

Proceeds will go to scholarships for guitar programs and the booking of guest artists and lecturers at the college.

Performances will include music by composers from places such as Japan, the Netherlands and South America.

The concert will feature solo guest artist Connie Sheu, a teacher at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music.

Holiday sing-along on tap in South Laguna

The public is invited to a holiday sing-along Sunday at the South Laguna Community Garden Park in Laguna Beach.

The Garden Band, with Tom Joliet, Tony Bisson and a troupe of ukelele musicians, will lead the performance. Songbooks will be provided to follow along.

The event, from 2 to 4 p.m., is free, and guests are encouraged to bring treats to share. The garden is at Eagle Rock Way and South Coast Highway.

Volunteers are welcome to help decorate the garden at 9 a.m. Saturday.

New website used in scavenger hunt for tickets to 2017 Pageant of the Masters

The Laguna Beach Festival of Arts will incorporate its new website, LagunaFestivalofArts.org, in an online scavenger hunt for two tickets to the 2017 Pageant of the Masters “The Grand Tour” show, which will run July 7 through Aug. 31.

To enter, participants can visit foapom.com/scavenger-hunt to answer five questions by looking at information on the new website starting Monday and ending Jan. 2. Each answer will give participants one entry in the raffle to win two tickets.

Three winners will be drawn in the raffle and will be contacted via email and announced on the festival’s Facebook page Jan. 3.

The “living pictures” show will include works by Leonardo da Vinci and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

3 H.B. schools to participate in the district’s first all-inclusive basketball tournament

Westminster High School will host the Huntington Beach Union High School District’s inaugural Unified Sports Holiday Hoops Classic tournament from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The event, sponsored by the Special Olympics Southern California, will bring together Special Olympic athletes and general education athletes to train and compete on the same basketball teams.

Three of the district’s schools — Edison, Fountain Valley and Westminster highs — will bring teams to the tournament.

Advisory board for UCI business school program gets new member

Resmark Impact Ventures’ chief operating officer, Patty Bartlett, has joined the advisory board of the Center for Real Estate at UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business.

The Center for Real Estate is a component of the school’s real estate program, which is dedicated to research and professional outreach.

Bartlett, a UCI alumna, serves as an Irvine planning commissioner.

“Patty is an influential leader in the real estate world, and we look forward to the many contributions she will make to the board and to our students,” Mark Kehke, co-chair for the center, said in a statement.

Resmark Impact Ventures provides access to emerging managers and is a platform of The Resmark Companies, a real estate private equity firm.

H.B. holiday raffle prize includes estimated $6,000

People could win $6,000 at a raffle on Dec. 21 at the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce’s first holiday fundraiser.

The chamber is collecting donations from businesses and residents until Dec. 21, when a name will be drawn at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Curry and Kabab Bistro, 7114 Edinger Ave.

The winner will receive an estimated $6,000, prizes from local businesses, gift baskets, a one-month fitness pass, restaurant gift cards and hotel accommodations.

Some of the proceeds will go toward the Huntington Beach Educational Foundation, a nonprofit that benefits local students.

H.B. Surf City Splash is planned to benefit surfing museum

The 17th annual Surf City Splash in Huntington Beach will feature a pancake breakfast, costume contest and dip in the ocean Jan. 1.

The event will start at 9 a.m. at Zach’s Pier Plaza, 405 Pacific Coast Hwy.

People can register for $20 at the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum, 411 Olive Ave. All proceeds from the event will benefit the museum.
