One firefighter suffered a minor injury Sunday afternoon while helping to douse a small brush fire just off Victoria Street, according to Costa Mesa authorities.

Crews responded around 5:30 p.m. to an area just below Vista Park where a small fire was producing a lot of smoke, Costa Mesa fire Capt. Chris Coates said.

The blaze, which covered about 200 feet by 100 feet, was burning next to a large concrete “Welcome to Costa Mesa” sign in the 1200 block of Victoria, Coates said.

Firefighters quickly doused the flames and prevented any damage to the sign, authorities said.

Crews then spent about 2 1/2 hours going through the thick vegetation to make sure any remnants of the fire were out, Coates said.

About 20 firefighters helped in the effort. One of them twisted an ankle and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being released, Coates said.
