A thief entered two neighboring homes in Costa Mesa through unlocked windows before fleeing Friday night, police said.

Costa Mesa police responded at 10:20 p.m. to a report of a residential burglary in the 1700 block of Santa Ana Avenue.

A resident was asleep when someone entered the person’s apartment, police said.

The resident woke up and saw the burglar, who fled, leaving behind some items, police said.

A burglary was reported at a neighboring home earlier that night in which shoes were stolen, police said.

The burglar in both cases was wearing a gray sweatshirt, authorities said. No other details were available.

The incidents occurred three nights after a violent apartment burglary in the 1900 block of Wallace Avenue in Costa Mesa. In that case, local resident Israel Larios Jr., 20, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 39-year-old woman and her 11- and 17-year-old sons were stabbed by an intruder. A relative of the family said the burglar had entered through a window.
