Ganahl Lumber gets extra time for new Costa Mesa location

Ganahl Lumber got some extra time from the Costa Mesa Planning Commission on Monday to get everything in order to develop a new, larger facility on Bristol Street.

The commission’s unanimous vote gives the hardware and lumber chain until March 17 to obtain all necessary approvals to move forward with a new location at 1100 Bristol.

Consultant Peter Naghavi, who spoke on behalf of Ganahl at Monday’s meeting, said it won’t take nearly that long for the company to start construction.

“Everything is already done. Permits are in hand, except the city’s building permit, which is expected in a couple of weeks,” he told the commission. “We are on our way.”

Ganahl plans to build four structures totaling about 106,000 square feet at its new site. That’s roughly twice the size of its existing store at 1275 Bristol St., which will close when the new facility opens.

The City Council OKd the proposal on March 17, 2015. The approval was valid for one year from that date.

In February, Ganahl asked the city for more time to get the state and county to sign off on the project.

At the time, city staff thought an extension might not be necessary. But negotiations among Ganahl, the county and the state took longer than anticipated, so staff decided to process the request.

The commission’s approval of the time extension is retroactive to March 17 this year.

In the past month, Ganahl secured the state and county approvals it needs to move forward with the project, according to Naghavi.

Construction is expected to take about 14 months and wrap up in January 2018, he said.
