New flag and official beauty contest adopted by Huntington Beach
The Huntington Beach logo flag adopted as the official city flag has four images depicting life in the city, set against a blue background.
The Huntington Beach council on Monday approved a new city flag and anointed an official city beauty pageant, moves aimed at strengthening the community’s identity at home on the national stage.
The vote to adopt the Huntington Beach logo flag that hangs in the council chambers as the official city flag was unanimous.
The logo flag has four separate images intended to depict life in the city, including one with a house and tree and one with a surfer, set against a blue background.
Councilwoman Jill Hardy, who proposed the resolution, said at the Nov. 22 meeting that she was tired of seeing different flags flown on city properties, including the Civic Center.
Hardy said she didn’t want people to be confused about the true city flag.
The council also passed a resolution declaring the Sand Dollars’ Miss Huntington Beach Scholarship Pageant as the city’s official beauty pageant.
The Sand Dollars, a section of the Women’s Club of Huntington Beach, has directed the event since 1977, though the pageant has been held since 1910. It provides scholarship opportunities for young Huntington Beach women.
Carol Ann Wall, vice president of the Sand Dollars, said the pageant is one of the group’s biggest events.
“We give wonderful women the chance to go to school and further their education,” Wall said at Monday’s meeting. “It’s not just a pageant. It’s a service to the community.
“It’s an amazing program, and the Sand Dollars are honored that the City Council felt it was important to make us the official directors and producers. That makes us so happy and it gives us credibility.”
At the Nov. 22 council meeting, Hardy, who proposed the resolution with Councilman Erik Peterson, said officially recognizing the pageant would encourage the Miss America pageant to affiliate with Huntington Beach.
“We want to encourage the Miss America venue because of its scholarship and community service platform,” Hardy said.
Also at Monday’s meeting, Mayor Jim Katapodis presented the Edison High School football team with awards for winning the Sunset League title and claiming the CIF Southern Section Division 3 championship.
“It’s been a fantastic year,” said Coach Dave White, who is retiring after 31 years of leading the program. “These guys are a great group of young men on and off the field. They set a lot of goals and worked real hard to accomplish them, but I am even more proud of how they are as teammates and as community leaders on and off the field.”
