Passerby helps driver, 92, after car crashes into lake at Huntington Beach park

A 92-year-old woman drove into Huntington Lake at Central Park in Huntington Beach on Wednesday morning after she mistook her car’s gas pedal for the brake, police said.

Huntington Beach police responded to Kathy May’s Lakeview Cafe at 6622 Lakeview Drive at about 11:40 a.m. after receiving a report that a car had crashed through a fence and into the water. The car was partially submerged, and a passerby helped the driver get out, police said.

The driver, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.
