Dozens of Huntington Beach hopefuls swam their hearts out Saturday morning during the city’s lifeguard tryouts, hoping to land one of the 20 open spots on the coveted team.

The tryouts were held at 8 a.m. near the lifeguard headquarters, at 103 Pacific Coast Hwy.

The exam consisted of 1,000- and 500-yard ocean swims and a 1,500-yard run and swim.
