Three people were displaced by a fire that caused serious damage to their Costa Mesa home, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to a report of a blaze at a single-story duplex in the 2200 block of Pomona Avenue at 4:46 p.m. Tuesday, said Battalion Chief Bill Kershaw of the Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Department.

About 20 firefighters quickly contained the flames to the front unit, which sustained about $40,000 in structural damage, Kershaw said. An additional $10,000 in damage was done to the contents of the home.

The kitchen and living room were the most heavily damaged, Kershaw said.

The three occupants of the home moved in with nearby family members and did not need aid from the American Red Cross, Kershaw said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Thursday afternoon.
