Political Landscape: Costa Mesa Police Assn. endorses 3 for City Council

The Costa Mesa Police Assn., which represents the city’s rank-and-file police officers, has endorsed City Council candidates Sandy Genis, Jay Humphrey and John Stephens in next month’s election.

“Every day the men and women who put on the Costa Mesa police uniform have one goal: safety for the citizens they serve and their colleagues,” association President David Sevilla said in a statement Wednesday. “This requires a positive climate of public safety, which we believe John Stephens, Sandy Genis and Jay Humphrey are dedicated to creating by working with others in nonpartisan leadership for all the citizens of Costa Mesa.”

Genis is seeking reelection to a second consecutive four-year term. She also served on the council from 1988 to 1996.

Humphrey, a retired pharmaceutical distribution executive, previously served on the council in the 1990s and ran in 2014.

Stephens, an attorney, ran in 2012.

The Costa Mesa Firefighters Assn., which represents city fire personnel, endorsed the same candidates in August.

In all, seven candidates are vying for three available seats in the Nov. 8 election.
