Costa Mesa man suspected of DUI, resisting arrest

A Costa Mesa man was arrested after police said he drunkenly fled from them in a car in Newport Beach.

Police responded to a domestic violence call from a woman at an apartment complex in the 200 block of Cagney Lane at 3:45a.m. Saturday, according to Newport Beach police.

When officers arrived on scene, a man who was suspected of being drunk almost backed into a police car before speeding off down the road, police said.

He later crashed into a pole near a tennis court about 100 yards away.

The man then jumped out of his car and tried to flee on foot, but was taken down by an officer, police said.

Peter Wells Gault, 45, whom police said fought with them before being taken into custody, was arrested on suspicion of felony evading, battery on a police officer, DUI, hit-and-run and resisting arrest.
