Woman recants story of being kidnapped at gunpoint in Costa Mesa by another woman, police say

Share

A woman who told authorities she was kidnapped in Costa Mesa last week by a gun-wielding woman who forced her to drive to Oceanside has taken back her story, Costa Mesa police said Wednesday.

The woman, who Oceanside police said is in her early 20s, originally told police that a woman with a gun approached her Aug. 11 near a Costa Mesa intersection and made her drive the kidnapper 50 miles south to Oceanside.

She originally told police that they drove around Oceanside for about a half-hour before the kidnapper told her to drop her off downtown.

Costa Mesa investigators followed up on the allegations Wednesday, and the woman recanted her report, said police Lt. Paul Beckman.

The Police Department did not release further details.
