A Costa Mesa man was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of shooting a stolen gun while under the influence of a stimulant, authorities said.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at an apartment at 447 Fair Drive at 12:55 a.m., Costa Mesa police Sgt. Dan Miles said.

Officers found two brothers in the residence and conducted a sweep of the home, finding a gun in the rear bathroom, Miles said.

The gun had been fired several times toward the front of the home, but no one was injured, Miles said.

The gun had been stolen from Huntington Beach, police Lt. Victor Bakkila said.

One of the brothers, Michael Moreno, 21, is suspected of firing the weapon while under the influence of a “central nervous system stimulant,” Bakkila said.

“He was paranoid and thought someone was coming to get him,” Bakkila said.

Moreno was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale, negligent discharge of a firearm, being under the influence of a controlled substance and possessing a stolen firearm, Miles said.

Moreno’s brother, who was not arrested, was able to take the gun from him and call police, Miles said.
