Police arrested three people early Thursday in Costa Mesa after breaking up illegal street racing involving up to 30 cars, authorities said.

Patrol officers saw the gathering near the intersection of Cadillac and Sunflower avenues at 12:21 a.m., Costa Mesa police Sgt. Dan Miles said.

When police arrived, three cars were racing, Miles said. As police tried to pull over the racers, the cars sped away, he said.

Police lost the racers but were able to pull over three other cars, Miles said.

Lantaro Vidal, 18, of Irvine, Carlos Cervantes Sanchez, 19, of Santa Ana and an unidentified juvenile were arrested and cited, then released, police Lt. Joyce LaPointe said.

Miles said the area near Sunflower and Cadillac is known as a prime location for street racing.
