A man in his late 30s who lives at a Costa Mesa home that was surrounded by Orange County sheriff’s deputies and a SWAT team Wednesday was taken to a hospital after what appeared to be suicide attempt, authorities said.

Before deputies arrived at the home in the 300 block of University Drive, the man’s father had taken him to a hospital for treatment after the man cut himself, apparently in an attempt to commit suicide, said sheriff’s Lt. Mark Stichter.

The man’s name was not released.

Deputies and Costa Mesa police went to the scene just after 2:15 p.m. after a neighbor reported hearing yelling inside the home and what she thought were gunshots, Stichter said.

Authorities entered the residence after they were unable to make contact with anyone inside, Stichter said. They found that no one was there.

University Drive between Irvine Avenue and Santa Ana Avenue was closed for about two hours while authorities investigated the scene.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether a weapon was fired inside the home, Stichter said.
