Mailbag: Some reactions to Donald Trump’s election are inappropriate

Share

I feel like my fellow Americans have taken a hypocritical oath and I missed the memo. When did riots and grotesque behavior become a standard when we don’t get what we want? I wasn’t raised this way. I was raised to respect authority, honor the military and not to throw a fit when I don’t get my way. The news has been filled with sadness and anger over President Trump winning the election. As the Rolling Stones sang so well, “You can’t always get what you want.”

I’m not saying everyone needs to jump on board and support Trump. I’m not even saying they need to dismiss a few of the comments he made in the past. All I’m saying is that whining and rioting in the streets is not the way to be heard. Yes, you’re loud. Yes, you’re getting the attention you want. But you’re not seeing how absurd and childlike you’re being. I take that back; most children are more behaved than the adults to whom I am referring.

Waving signs that read, “Love Trumps Hate,” while saying hateful words about a man whose ideals differ from yours and attacking his 10-year-old son with vicious “jokes,” is not spreading the message of love. Try a new approach. Love one another. Help others when you can. And speak only words of kindness. Showing love is the best way to make a change, not destroying property and hurting others.

Recognize the Obama economy

Oh, the irony of it all. The day Donald Trump was sworn into office, it was announced that Orange County’s unemployment rate was 3.5% — the lowest in a decade. By comparison, the day Barack Obama took office, O.C.’s unemployment rate was 6.5%. Despite all the heated rhetoric of the 2016 presidential election, I guess the Obama economy really did work.

Not an absolute, complete shutout, but approaching that. This is a Costa Mesa/Newport Beach local rag, and I understand the newspaper environment these days, but it doesn’t excuse the recent coverage priorities.

If this continues to be the trend, I will sadly start pulling the Pilot out of The Times and filing it with the ads in the pile I don’t give any eyeballs to. For nearly 30 years, I’ve always gone to the Daily Pilot first before digging into The Times. I’d like to continue doing that but ...
