Congratulations to the Harbor High pep squad

Share

I have to admit, I’m not up to date on high school events and activities, due to having graduated high school in the cowboy days of buckboards, dirt streets and absolutely no cellphones. OK, I stretched it a bit, but it’s been many, many years since my school days.

The Newport Harbor High pep squad that just took home the award for the overall highest points scored at the SHARP National Championships at the Cashman Center in Vegas was very impressive. What got my attention, however, was the photo of the entire squad perched in front of one of the most, if not the most, well known site and signs on the planet. I’m of course referring to the late Betty Willis’ creation of the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” sign on the famed Las Vegas Strip. For millions, if not billions, of people this sign represents long ago or recent memories of those who have taken the chance to come to Sin City for various reasons.

Realized or not, the photo with the pep squad and the information for their visit to Vegasprobably set off a plethora of desires, phone calls and reservations to visit that famed neon city in the middle of the desert. Had the squad not done as well as it did, the photo with the famous sign most likely would be absent from the issue of the Daily Pilot and, therefore, there would be less business coming into town.

Vegas should thank Newport Harbor High for their forthcoming business, due to the exposure of their famous sign.

Trump protests got out of hand

Wow, just wow. How utterly embarrassing for our community to be in the spotlight for the abysmal behavior by some of those protesting Donald Trump’s visit. Regardless of what side of the aisle you are on, every American has the opportunity to protest, but to protest with violence is beyond disturbing.

Keep allowing dogs on the beach

I was born in Newport Beach in 1958. I have lived here my whole life. Since the earliest day I canremember it has always been a dog beach, with no leash law enforced. I think because someone just now has moved within the dog beach area and is fighting this is so unfair! The dog beach was here first!

Dogs need this one small area to run, play and swim with the freedom of being unleashed. I do have three grand dogs and without the dog beach to go to I am at a loss. It’s the freedom of no leashes that makes this a great place. We as humans have the freedom to go anywhere in the whole world. This little place is their only freedom.
