H.J. Garrett Furniture served the community well

I would like to thank the Garrett family for the years of service to the community. Their unwavering integrity and friendly service will be missed.

As I look around my home, I notice that the majority of our furniture is from H.J. Garrett in Costa Mesa, and then I remembered how each and every piece was purchased with an always good experience.

It’s sad to think after all these years they will be closing and then the fact there is no place left in Orange County that represents quality furniture, fair prices and great service.

Big box stores and the Internet are no substitute for this fine family business.

Thanks for everything, Garrett family, you will be missed.

Banning project to restore brownfield

I would suggest that Banning Ranch is a great opportunity for our community, and the Coastal Commission should approve the proposed project without further ado.

As it stands now, the Banning Ranch property is an environmental wasteland fenced off from public access. It is a brownfield, which will require a lot of money to be invested in its cleanup. The alternative to the proposed development is leaving it as is, not cleaning it up as open space, as some opponents would suggest. That is unrealistic and unaffordable.

The developers are willing to invest millions to clean up the land, leave large portions of the ranch to public access and develop just 20% of the property. This is a total win-win for the people of Newport Beach and the community at large, and an opportunity that should not be lost. It is important for the Coastal Commission to approve this so that it can move forward.

Future of Irvine Tilly’s mural

It’s not clear why they’re going to the trouble and expense of taking it down now that it’s up. You have to keep reapplying to keep a paint job after you get it approved? Is that true for all businesses? What happens if they don’t?
