Mailbag: I miss the days when there was more feel-good news in the Daily Pilot

Share

My wife and I welcomed our first little girl into the world early in the morning on Oct. 20 at Hoag Hospital. I’m assuming you are aware they make a kind gesture and distribute your newspaper to all the families who welcome their newborn children into the world.

They attach a very nice note that reads, “Congratulations! This copy of the Daily Pilot is for you to keep as a remembrance of current events, news and trends from today, the day of your baby’s birth. Please accept this special keepsake, compliments of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.”

Seeing this left in our room with the note of this kind gesture brought smiles to our faces, only to quickly turn our thoughts to shock and disgust. As we took the note off and opened the newspaper, the headline story in bold print directly under the name of your newspaper read, “Former teacher slits his own throat in court after rape conviction.”

I was also born in Hoag Hospital and am excited to bring my little girl into this world. It is exciting to think we will be raising her in the same area my parents raised me. I grew up with the Daily Pilot and remember it being a feel-good local paper. I remember having my picture in your paper at a very young age being a part of a Big Wheel race down the hill on Placentia, next to Estancia High School.

While attending Costa Mesa High School, I remember being excited seeing my name in your paper when I had a good soccer or baseball game. I remember after my dad retired, he gave me an article he clipped out of your paper that he had kept at his desk, which had my name mentioned from one of my baseball games.

With all of these great memories growing up, and your paper being a part of that, I’m sadly disappointed to have the headline of your paper read, “Former teacher slits his own throat after rape conviction.” It is journalism like this that, in my humble opinion, reduces the morals and judgments of certain people.

It would be great to have the Daily Pilot I grew up with that was the feel-good local paper. If people could get headline recognition for generous and kind acts, maybe there would be less of these gruesome stories to write about.

Instead, your paper has become something that might make some disturbed individual do something terrible to receive recognition. One thing I know for certain, my newborn daughter will not remember the day I gave her the copy of your paper to let her know what you thought were the current events, news and trends from the day she was born.

Dietary tips for women

Carrie Luger Slayback wrote two articles, one on April 15 about osteoporosis and the other on Aug. 26, about caffeine and bone density. I have a response to both that might be helpful, especially to women. Simply, a combination of real food and real exercise will generally help more people far more than fad diets, etc. In our culture, it takes work and discipline, but that’s the basic truth.

From birth, we all should be eating a nutrient-dense diet that is very high in natural animal fats, raw whole milk and raw whole butter from grass-fed cows; cod liver oil, in order for the body to efficiently and effectively process minerals; fish; grass-fed read meats; free-range fowl; bone broth from grass-fed beef or free-range fowl; real probiotics from real foods, such as raw whole milk yogurt, fruit or tea Kombucha, and properly prepared veggies like sauerkraut, pickled beats/carrots and kimchi; and vegetables that are high-vitamin, high-density foods, such as kale, squash, beets, cabbage, etc.

These elements, especially if eaten from birth, make for a strong bone structure and vastly stronger immune system. More information is available the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) website at westonaprice.org.
