CIF Southern Section Finals

Southern Division

It has been a known fact since before the season began that the 145s of the Sunset League would be a force to be reckoned with.

All three of the league’s representatives earned top-five seeds in the weight class at the Southern Division Finals at Brea Olinda High.

After Friday’s action, the trio is still alive and well in the championship bracket. Top-seeded Karson Ayres of Fountain Valley will oppose Newport Harbor’s Xander Moreno in the semifinals on Saturday.

Marina’s John McCoy also advanced as a semifinalist at the highly-competitive weight class.

Several others kept themselves in contention for titles on championship Saturday. Fountain Valley is sending Merrick O’Donnell (182s) and George Sykes (195s) into the semifinals.

Wyatt Been (170s) continues to advance through the main draw for Marina, while five other Vikings are still vying for a Masters spot in the consolation bracket.

DJ Van Oostendrop will have to fight through the consolation bracket after O’Donnell defeated him for the third time this season.

Inland Division

A Corona del Mar duo doubled their fun on Friday, as Jewlian Avila and Zavier McGuire were able to advance to the second day of the Inland Division tournament at Temecula Valley High.

Avila (160s) tallied three pins against one loss, and McGuire went 2-1 in the 195s.

Tim Hurlbut (138s) and Jacob Peterson (285s) went winless for the Sea Kings.
