College Roundup: UCI women’s basketball wins in OT

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 74, Cal Poly SLO 71 (OT)

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Brooke Bayman had 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, two steals and 11 turnovers to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game on Saturday.

Shareen Sutherland had 14 points and 11 rebounds in 34 minutes off the bench. She was five for eight from the field and four for four from the foul line.

Irene Chavez had 17 points and six rebounds. She was eight for eight from the foul line to help UCI make 17 of 20 free-throw attempts.

Andee Ritter had 11 points and Brittany Glassow added 10 for the ‘Eaters (4-22, 2-10 in conference), who ended an eight-game losing streak.

Cal Poly, which was 13 for 21 from the foul line, is 10-15, 6-7.

Vanguard 58, Arizona Christian 47

PHOENIX – Claire Lamunu had 17 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals to lead the No. 3-ranked visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Jamie Goff had 12 rebounds and five points, while Hanna Tabron added 10 points for the winners (25-2, 13-1 in conference).

ACU is 13-12, 7-7.

Vanguard plays host to No. 6-ranked Westmont on Tuesday. A win would clinch an outright GSAC crown for the Lions.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

SANTA CLARITA – Tyler Steele improved to 4-0 for the Lions, who won the second game, 5-4, after dropping the opener, 13-2, in Golden State Athletic Conference play at The Master’s on Saturday.

Trai Patrick was three for four with two runs batted in, while Michael Fuchs drove in two and Brandon Sandoval and Brock Eissman were both two for four for the No. 20-ranked Lions (10-5, 5-1 in conference).

Sandoval, Eissman and Shane Elias-Calles were all two for four in the first game.

No. 11-ranked The Master’s is 6-10, 1-5.

Doubleheader

BAKERSFIELD – Visiting Golden West swept a pair of nonconference games on Saturday at Bakersfield.

The Rustlers won the first game, 12-2, and earned a 6-2 triumph in the seven-inning second game.

In the opener, Tyler Franzman allowed two hits and struck out eight in seven shutout innings to improve to 2-2.

Nick Tringrides was four for five with four runs batted in while Zakk Morgan, Louie Canjura and Chris Rodriguez had two hits apiece for the Rustlers.

Jeff Zordani and Justin Marquez had two RBIs apiece in the opener.

In the second game, Rodriguez was three for four with two runs and one RBI, while Zordani, Aiden Cacciatore and Jake Hinzo had two hits apiece for the Rustlers (6-4).

Stephen Knapp improved to 3-0 with a complete-game effort.

Bakersfield is 4-10.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Arizona Christian 88, Vanguard 81

PHOENIX – Brandon Hood had 22 points and Shacquille Dawkins added 16 for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Hood made four of five three-point attempts for the Lions (6-22, 4-10 in conference).

ACU is 17-10, 4-10.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UCLA 16, UC Irvine 1

LOS ANGELES – Corona del Mar High product and Olympian Maddie Mussleman led the host Bruins with four goals in the nonconference game Friday.

Newport Harbor High product Carlee Kapana had 13 saves for the No. 3-ranked Bruins.

No. 6-ranked UCI fell to 7-4.
