UCI’s Nelson earns another honor

UC Irvine senior Luke Nelson has been named second-team All-District 9 by the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches.

Nelson, a 6-foot-3 guard who was the Big West Conference Player of the Year and a two-time first-team All-Big West performer, averaged a team-best 16.9 points per game to help the Anteaters (21-15) claim the outright regular-season conference title.

Nelson was also an All-Big West Tournament honoree for the third straight season.

He ranks No. 1 in UCI history with 258 three-pointers and is fourth in UCI annals in points (1,531) and assists (415). His 145 steals rank fifth in program history.

He was part of the senior class, along with Jaron Martin and Ioannis Dimakopoulos, that won 93 games in four seasons and advanced to the postseason each of those years under Coach Russell Turner.
