Team USA women beat Greece, win group

The U.S. senior national women’s water polo beat Greece, 15-7, at the Olympic Qualification Tournament on Thursday in Gouda, the Netherlands.

With the victory, Team USA clinched first place in Group A with one group match left to play.

Team USA, which has former CdM star Maddie Musselman and former Newport Harbor and USC star Kaleigh Gilchrist on its roster, was led Thursday by Kiley Neushul. She had five goals and five assists. Team captain Maggie Steffens added three goals.

Ashley Johnson added nine saves and five steals for Team USA, which improved to 4-0 in the tournament.

Team USA plays South Africa in its final group game on Friday at 4:40 a.m. Pacific time. The match will be webcast live.

Saturday’s crucial quarterfinal match, which Team USA must win to secure a berth to the 2016 Summer Olympics, will be against either France or Germany and take place at 4 a.m. Pacific time. The match will be televised on NBC Sports Network, on tape delay, at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time.
