All-League Boys’ Soccer: CdM’s Joyce is PCL Offensive MVP

Corona del Mar High senior forward Grant Joyce took home the Pacific Coast League Offensive MVP honor for leading the boys’ soccer team to an unbeaten league title.

Joyce, who scored 18 goals and assisted on seven others, is one of four Sea Kings on the first team. The others are senior goalkeeper Christopher Bartolic, junior forward Kyle Mabwa and sophomore holding midfielder Matt Katz.

The foursome brought a second straight league crown to CdM (15-3-5, 8-0-2 in league), and the Sea Kings reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs. The Sea Kings lost on the road to eventual champion Godinez, 2-0.

CdM senior defenders Chase Dugan and Andrea Pregoni made the second team.

University senior Julian Ricci was the Pacific Coast League Defensive MVP.

Estancia’s Millan and Laguna’s Fredlow grab top honors

Estancia High junior Luis Millan shared the Orange Coast League Defensive MVP award in boys’ soccer, and Laguna Beach junior Cole Fredlow was the Goalie MVP.

Estancia sophomore forward Rafael Espinoza, senior midfielder Ulisses Gomez and junior midfielder Sergio Gutierrez, along with Laguna Beach junior midfielder Sterling Butler, senior forward Walmer Landaverde and senior forward Bruce Knill, and Costa Mesa senior defender Jeyson Calderon made the first team.

Millan, Espinoza, Gomez and Gutierrez led Estancia (12-9-1, 7-3-0 in league) to a runner-up finish in league and the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. Estancia lost at home in penalty kicks, 11-10, to Paso Robles in the first round.

Fredlow, Butler, Landaverde and Knill helped the Breakers (6-9-4, 4-4-2) take third in league and qualify for the Division 5 playoffs. Laguna Beach fell at Temecula Valley, 3-1, in a wild-card match.

Millan finished with five goals and five assists. He shared the defensive honor with Godinez junior Jose Marquez.

Espinoza totaled 17 goals and 10 assists.

Gomez recorded 12 goals and eight assists.

Gutierrez had six goals and five assists.

Calderon is a two-time first-team selection for Costa Mesa (8-8-3, 3-5-2), which came in fifth in league and missed the postseason.

Members of the second team included Estancia senior midfielder Daniel Segura, sophomore defender Gerardo Leon and junior defender Ivan Godinez, as well as Laguna Beach junior midfielder Marcus Randrup and senior defender Finn Moriarty, and Costa Mesa sophomore defender Tristen Trepas and junior forward Luis Anaya.

Godinez senior forward Bryan Ibarra was named the Orange Coast League MVP.

Ocean View’s Djurasevic nabbed league offensive award

Ocean View High junior forward Christian Djurasevic earned the Golden West League Offensive Player of the Year award for scoring 16 goals during the boys’ soccer season.

Djurasevic is on the first team with two teammates, senior goalkeeper Pablo Ramirez and senior sweeper Mauricio Gomez. The trio helped the Seahawks (7-10-2, 5-5-0 in league) to a fourth-place finish in league.

Ramirez made 65 saves, and Gomez had four assists.

Ocean View sophomore defender Sergio Pacheco and freshman midfielder Miguel Flores made the second team.

Santa Ana senior midfielder Oscar Catalan was the Golden West League MVP, and Santa Ana senior defender Rafa Guzman was the Defensive Player of the Year.

Munger honored again by Academy League

Sage Hill School junior Chase Munger, who scored 22 goals, made the All-Academy League first team for the second straight boys’ soccer season.

Munger is on the first team with senior teammate Nelson Kim, and Brethren Christian junior Tristan Lund.

Munger and Kim led the Lightning (5-9, 5-5 in league) to a fourth-place finish in league, while Lund’s Warriors (0-12, 0-10) placed last.

Kim, a repeat first-team member, finished with three goals and three assists.

Sage Hill juniors Sallar Tahbaz and Florian Schaison, and Brethren Christian junior Dustin Park received second-team recognition.

St. Margaret’s junior John Leasure was the Academy League MVP.

Los Amigos’ Chavez makes first team

Los Amigos High senior midfielder Antonio Chavez is a first-team All-Garden Grove League selection in boys’ soccer.

The Lobos finished 6-10-2 overall and 3-6-1 in league, good enough for fifth place.

Los Amigos sophomore midfielder Dominic Rodriguez made the second team.

Santiago senior Jesus Vargas was the Garden Grove League MVP.
