High School Roundup: Genova’s one-hit gem leads NHHS to win

Senior Luke Genova threw a one-hitter and struck out seven, helping the host Sailors win their third straight Sunset League game on Friday.

Newport Harbor (10-12, 5-6 in league) is tied for fourth in league with Fountain Valley. Both teams are one game back of third-place Huntington Beach. Four league games remain, and the top three teams earn automatic berths into the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

John Olmstead drove in both runs, on a single in the first and on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Sailors play host to Marina on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Woodbridge 2, Corona del Mar 1

Kevin McCarthy had two hits for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game on Friday.

CdM dropped to 17-4, 7-4 in league.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Northwood

Matt Ctvrtlik had 21 assists and five blocks to lead the Sea Kings to a 25-11, 25-9, 25-14 Pacific Coast League win on Friday.

Kevin Kobrine (seven kills), Mitch Haly (seven kills, four blocks), Jake Meyer (seven kills, four blocks), Shane Gooding (five digs) and Will Hunter (four aces) also contribute for CdM (21-5, 9-0 in league).

Whitney def. Sage Hill

Albert Son finished with eight kills for the host Lightning in the Academy League match that Whitney won, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23, on Friday.
