High School Roundup: Sailors shock St. Margaret’s to make semifinals

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 13, St. Margaret’s 12 (OT)

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Sophomore Adena Rothbard had the game-winning goal for the No. 10-seeded Sailors, who upset No. 2 St. Margaret’s in the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs on Thursday at St. Margaret’s.

Rothbard finished with six goals in the game for Newport Harbor (12-6), which advanced to the playoff semifinals for the first time in program history. The Sailors will play No. 3 Foothill in the semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m. at Irvine High.

It was the second straight road upset for Newport, following Tuesday’s first-round win at San Juan Hills.

Sarah Farley had three goals for the Sailors, and Katie Hendrix scored twice. Heather Roberts and Caitlin Dwyer scored one goal each.

Rylie Siegfried led Newport Harbor with three ground balls and seven draws won. Goalie Hannah Sanders made six saves.

“It was a classic back and forth battle,” Newport Harbor Coach Matt Armstrong said in a text message. “Both teams fought hard. Clearly, Adena was the offensive standout. Each team defended the other team’s best player really well.”

SOFTBALL

Costa Mesa 11, Estancia 10

Katie Belmontes had a two-run home run for the Mustangs in Thursday’s Orange Coast League game at Estancia High.

Kintak Keju added a three-run triple for Costa Mesa (9-8, 4-4 in league), while Brenna Alvis, Valerie Castro and Paige Fisher each had singles in the top of the sixth that helped tie the game.

Estancia had the tying run on second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Alvis threw to Castro for an out at third base on a ground ball in the hole by Estancia’s Emily Kubisty. The runner was originally called safe but the call was overturned.

Kalena Shepherd hit a three-run home run and a double for Estancia (9-11, 5-3 in league). Maya and Nefertiti Van Den Heever both also had doubles for the Eagles.

With two games remaining in league, Estancia is tied for second place with Calvary Chapel, a game up on fourth-place Costa Mesa. Only the top three teams are guaranteed CIF berths.

Costa Mesa plays at first-place Godinez on Tuesday, while Estancia is home against Laguna Beach.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Pacific Coast League tournament

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High senior Bjorn Hoffmann beat teammate Pedro Fernandez del Valle, 8-1, to win the league singles title Thursday at Beckman High.

It is the first singles title for Hoffmann, who was second in league as a sophomore and junior. He and Fernandez del Valle both qualify for the CIF Individuals tournament.

Hoffmann beat Stefan Dostanic of Woodbridge, 6-2, 6-3, in the league singles semifinals, while Fernandez del Valle got past Axel Stern of Beckman, 6-1, 6-3.

Academy League tournament

CERRITOS — Max Pham of Fairmont Prep, a Newport Coast resident, beat Adam Langevin of Sage Hill, 6-2, 6-2, in the singles finals Thursday at Cerritos Sports Park.

Pham and Langevin both advance to the CIF Individuals tournament.

Langevin beat Sage teammate Emin Torlic, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals, while Pham got past Sage Hill freshman Steven Ferry, 6-0, 6-1.

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s David Lee and Mark Schaefer reached the doubles finals and qualified for the CIF Southern Section Individuals tournament Thursday at Huntington Beach High.

Lee and Schaefer lost to the top-seeded team from Fountain Valley, 3-6, 6-0, 10-8, for the league doubles title.

The Sailors duo beat a Fountain Valley tandem, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals.

TRACK AND FIELD

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High senior Emma Kratzberg won the 100-meter (14.54 seconds) and 300 hurdles (42.34) to qualifty for the CIF Southern Section preliminaries Thursday at Huntington Beach High.

Junior Mark Field won the boys’ 1,600 in 4:25.33. Freshman Mia Matsunami won the 3,200 in 11:33.50.

Also qualifying were: Alexis Garcia (second in girls’ 3,200, 9:45.88), Cole Smith (second, discus, 166-5; second, shotput, 56-3), Emily Bacon (third, 1,600, 5:21.23), Grace Clemence (third, pole vault, 10-2) and Michael Jarboe (fourth, shotput, 53-6) also qualified as did Helen Coyne, Lauren Loucks, Holly Clemence and Kratzberg with a third-place finish in the girls’ 4x400 relay (4:08.03).

BOYS’ GOLF

Sunset League finals

LONG BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Ethan Barnes and Noah Mayne were among nine who qualified to Monday’s CIF Southern Section Individual tournament Thursday at Skylinks Golf Course.

Barnes shot four-over-par 76 and Mayne shot a 79 while competing against 14 other players, including Newport Harbor’s Campbell Norris (80-83—163).

Barnes shot a 79 on Wednesday and Mayne shot a 77. Both will return to compete at Skylinks on Monday.
