College Roundup: Lions earn OT win

Vanguard 2, William Jessup 1 (OT)

Juan Arellano scored early in the second overtime to lift the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

Vanguard’s Zac Way erased a 1-0 deficit in the 70th minute and Arellano converted an assist by Jesus Carmona to help the No. 8-ranked Lions improve to 6-1, 1-1 in conference.

Brandon Gomez made six saves for Vanguard, which plays host to Westmont on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

WJU is 4-3, 0-1.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 5, William Jessup 0

Madison Lopp had two goals and three Lions added one goal and one assist to help the No.10-ranked hosts in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Alex Bachman, Lauren Aronson and Allie Griffith all had a goal and an assist, while Haley Bruce had two assists to help Vanguard (7-2, 2-0 in conference) win its seventh straight game.

Haley Magana made one save to preserve the shutout as Vanguard had a 21-6 shot advantage.

WJU is 3-5, 0-1.

Vanguard plays host to No. 3-ranked Westmont on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Mountain Pacific Invitational

WALNUT CREEK – UC Irvine defeated San Jose State, 12-7, to rebound from an 8-7 overtime loss earlier Saturday to Pomona-Pitzer at North Gate High.

Jack Trush scored five times for the Anteaters (6-5) in the loss, including a goal with 52 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Against San Jose State, Bryant Jourdrie and Ian Fleenor had three goals apiece for UCI.

UCI goalie Matej Matijevic had 17 saves against his former school.

UCI completes the tournament on Sunday against an opponent to be determined.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Long Beach State def. UC Irvine

Senior outside hitter Victoria Dennis had a match-high 23 kills, but the host Anteaters fell, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14, 18-25, 15-13, to the 49ers in a Big West Conference match on Saturday.

Harlee Kekauoha had 13 kills and 13 digs for UCI (5-11, 0-2 in conference), for which Danielle Geiger added 11 kills and four block assists.

Long Beach State is 8-7, 2-0.

The Master’s def. Vanguard

The host Lions rallied after losing the first two sets, but the visitors prevailed, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 15-12, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match on Saturday.

Aubryn Coale led Vanguard (5-12, 2-3 in conference) with 22 kills and hit .400 on 45 attempts.

Lyndsey Ng and Rabecca Lowden each had 17 digs, while Kelly Dalrymple and Rory McCloy had 23 and 22 assists, respectively, for the Lions.

TMC is 12-5, 5-1.
