College Roundup: UCI wins exhibition

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 81, Sonoma State 63

Senior guard Jaron Martin scored 18 points and several other Anteaters were productive in the exhibition game on Saturday at the Bren Events Center.

Martin made seven of 10 field-goal attempts and added four steals and three assists to help the Anteaters lead wire-to-wire.

Senior Ioannes Dimakopoulos had 13 points and five rebounds, while freshman Max Hazzard had 10 points.

Freshman Tommy Rutherford had eight points, five rebounds and four blocked shots, while freshman guard Eyssu Worku chipped in seven points and four assists.

Sophomore guard Brandon Smith and seven points, sophomore forward Jonathan Galloway had a team-best eight rebounds, and freshman John Edgar added four boards and three assists.

UCI shot 51% from the field and made 22 of 26 foul shots, while forcing 18 turnovers and committing 12.

UCI opens its season on Friday at home against Utah State at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 73, Chapman 69

Teslam Idris had 14 points and five rebounds to lead the host Lions in their nonconference season opener on Thursday night at the Pit.

Idris made six of eight field-goal attempts and both of his foul shots.

Vanguard made five of eight three-point attempts in the opening half and forced 16 turnovers, while committing only eight.

Brandon Brothers (12 points), Shacquille Dawkins (10 points and five assists) and Jamaal Lee (six points and nine rebounds) also stood out for the Lions.

Vanguard plays host to Whittier on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 3, Biola 3

The host Lions posted a 3-1 advantage in the penalty kick shootout to advance out of the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Junior goalkeeper Brandon Gomez stopped three shots in the shootout, then buried his PK to keep the Lions’ season alive, as the game is registered as a tie. Gomez had two saves in regulation, as well as two overtime periods.

No. 3-seeded Vanguard (11-4-1) received two goals from Juan Arellano and another from Nathan Miramontes, who scored in the 85th minute to force overtime.

Miramontes and Arellano also converted in the shootout for the winners, who face No. 2-seeded Menlo (13-4-1) on Thursday at noon at Biola.

No. 6-seeded Biola is 10-6-1.

The GSAC tournament title game is Saturday at 4 p.m. at Biola.
