Advantage Riptide team is runner-up

The all-girl Advantage Academy Riptide finished second in the coed Southern California Fall Junior Team Tennis Sectional Championships in Palm Desert over the Jan. 7-8 weekend.

The Riptide, which plays out of the Newport Beach Tennis Club, fell in the 14s final on games, 27-18, after being tied 2-2 in matches against the Tru Cru from Whittier.

Corona del Mar resident Hannah Jervis, Newport Beach residents Reece Kenerson and Alden Mulroy and Laguna Beach resident Sarah MacCallum all contributed for the Riptide. Hannah Lee of San Clemente, Avery Hopkey of Laguna Hills and Kenzington Mann of Tustin were the other team members.

The team went 7-1 in the regular season, winning league by 14 games for the season over Laguna Niguel Racquet Club (also 7-1). The team then won the Orange County Championships over the winner of the other OC bracket, Tustin Sports Park, 8-1 (65-32 in games) in December to advance to the sectionals in the desert.

In the desert, the Riptide beat iTennis (Riverside) Saturday morning, 3-1, 30-18 in games; Pleasant Valley Panthers (Camarillo), 4-0, 32-1 in games, and finished bracket play against Camarillo 14s, 3-1, 30-14 in games. The Riptide won their bracket by going 92-33 in games, a 73% winning percentage.
