Laguna Beach’s Armstrong is league offensive MVP

Laguna Beach High junior Adam Armstrong was selected as the Orange Coast League Offensive MVP in football, while Estancia junior Andy Martinez and Laguna Beach sophomore Sean Nolan shared the Special Teams MVP award.

Armstrong, a wide receiver, led the Breakers (8-5, 4-1 in league) to a runner-up finish in league and the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 13 playoffs.

Laguna Beach lost in the semifinals on the road to top-seeded Santa Ana, 66-27. The semifinal appearance marked Laguna Beach’s first since 2012.

Armstrong finished with 25 receptions for 430 yards and four touchdowns.

Martinez, a kicker, was perfect on his eight field-goal attempts. His longest field goal was from 52 yards.

Martinez also converted 11 of 12 extra-point kicks.

Nolan, a kicker, converted six of 10 field-goal tries and 38 of 42 extra-point kicks.

Nolan averaged 38 yards per punt.

Laguna Beach’s five other first-team selections were junior quarterback Curtis Harrison, Bruce Knill, a senior running back and defensive back, Ryan Blaser, a senior receiver and linebacker, Matt Hayes, a senior running back and defensive back, and junior lineman Zach Fields.

Estancia’s first-team members were senior all-purpose player Tyler Ross, Trevor Brown, a senior receiver and defensive back, and senior linebacker Kainoa Korionoff.

The Eagles finished 2-8 overall and 1-4 in league, tied for fourth place with rival Costa Mesa and Saddleback.

Costa Mesa (1-9 overall) had Roman Ayala, a senior running back and linebacker, Jack Perez, a junior tight end and linebacker, and Brandon Gonzalez, a sophomore cornerback and receiver, on the first team.

Harrison completed 163 of 288 passes for 2,100 yards and 22 touchdowns, with nine interceptions. He rushed 141 times for 298 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Knill carried the ball 72 times for 380 yards and three touchdowns. He had 18 receptions for 305 yards and five touchdowns.

Blaser finished with 48 receptions for 633 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hayes rushed 62 times for 368 yards and five touchdowns.

Fields is a repeat first-team selection.

Ross, a running back and receiver, had 69 carries for 258 yards and five touchdowns, and 36 catches for 346 yards and three touchdowns.

As a free safety, Ross totaled 63 tackles, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery.

On special teams, Ross averaged 37.1 yards per punt, and 32.3 yards per kickoff return and 27 yards per punt return.

Brown finished with 42 catches for 526 yards and three touchdowns.

Brown had 37 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception.

Korionoff produced 74 tackles, one interception and three pass breakups.

Ayala finished with 130 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, four passes defensed, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Perez had 53 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and five passes defensed.

Gonzalez had 63 tackles and seven passes defensed.

Godinez sophomore running back Patrick McMorris was the league MVP, Calvary Chapel senior outside linebacker Bryce Debernarde was the Defensive MVP, and Godinez junior defensive tackle Jakob Thompson was the Lineman MVP.
