Tennis: Breakers edge Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Orange County Breakers stayed tied for first place in World Team Tennis with a 22-19 road victory over the Springfield Lasers on Wednesday night.

The Breakers won their sixth straight match to improve to 7-2, tied with the San Diego Aviators.

Dennis Novikov won the first game in extended play Wednesday to win the match for the Breakers, who beat the Lasers for the second time in two nights. Benjamin Becker had beaten Novikov, 5-4, in men’s singles.

Orange County got its two set wins in women’s singles and doubles. Nicole Gibbs beat Michaella Krajicek, 5-1, in women’s singles, while Gibbs and Alla Kudryavtseva earned a 5-3 win over Krajicek and Pauline Parmentier.

The Breakers’ Kudryavtseva and Scott Lipsky lost to Krajicek and Eric Butorac, 5-3, in mixed doubles, while Lipsky and Novikov were topped by Becker and Butorac, 5-4, in men’s doubles.

Orange County plays at New York on Thursday.
