MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Mustang Challenge

SANTA CLARITA —UC Irvine senior Isaiah Thompson was the first collegiate finisher and second overall to lead the Anteaters to the team title on Saturday at Central Park.

UCI was the top team in NCAA Division I scoring and the overall field.

Thompson ran the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 59.6 seconds.

UCI’s Izzak Mireles was fifth overall (25:12.4), Nolan Del Valle was 12th in 25:36.6, and Hector Garcia was 15th in 25:51.9.

Also for UCI, Eric Lawver was 16th in 25:53.4, Samuel Ayala was 21st in 25:59.4, and Ashton Garcia was 24th in 26:01.9.

UCI finished with 27 points in Division I scoring, three better than UCLA.

The ‘Eaters return to action Oct. 15 at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside.

Mustang Challenge

SANTA CLARITA — UC Irvine freshman Anastasia Karnaze was first in the Division I field and fifth overall to lead the Anteaters to the NCAA Division I title at Central Park on Saturday.

UCI’s 17 points in Division I scoring were 29 better than runner-up Cal State Bakersfield.

Karnaze completed the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 58.5 seconds.

Also for UCI, Marisa Gonzalez was 15th overall in 18:41.3, Lisa Vasquez was 20th in 18:51.6, and Aliya Shah was 28th in 18:59.6.

The Anteaters will be back in competition Oct. 15 in the Highlander Invitational at Riverside.

MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 1, Biola 0

LA MIRADA -- Miguel Tapia scored in the 45th minute with the aide of a long throw-in by Zac Way to propel the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Vanguard, which posted a 17-8 edge in shots, improved to 7-2, 2-2 in conference.

Brandon Gomez had two saves to preserve the shutout.

Biola is 7-3, 2-2.

UC Davis 3, UC Irvine 2

The host Anteaters rallied for a 2-1 lead, but couldn’t hold on in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Luis Leon scored back-to-back goals within a 66-second span for UCI to erase a 1-0 deficit, but the Aggies equalized in the 61st minute, then netted the game-winner in the 67th minute.

UCI fell to 2-9, 0-2 in conference.

UC Davis is 5-4-1, 1-1.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. Menlo

ATHERTON — The visiting Lions earned a 25-10, 25-22, 25-21 sweep in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Juanae Johnson had a team-best 15 kills and hit .367 for the Lions, while adding two block assists.

Kelly Dalrymple had 22 assists and Rebecca Lowden had 16 digs, three aces, four assists and one block assist for the Lions (7-12, 4-2 in conference).

Menlo is 9-11, 1-5.

The host Anteaters fell, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22, 28-26, in the Big West Conference match on Saturday.

Harliee Kekauoha had 12 kills and three aces for UCI (6-12, 1-3 in conference).

UC Davis is 8-8, 1-2.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Biola 1, Vanguard 0

LA MIRADA – The host Eagles scored in the 17th minute and made it hold up in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

No. 12-ranked Biola (9-0-1, 3-0-1 in conference) knocked the No. 10-ranked Lions (8-3, 3-1) out of first place and halted their eight-game winning streak.

Biola posted a 21-7 advantage in shots.

Haley Magana had seven saves for Vanguard.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

MALIBU – UC Irvine junior Vivien Dvali and freshman Constance Branstine won their doubles match Saturday to advance to the prequalifying round of 16 on Sunday.

Dvali and Branstine defeated Nataliya Vlasova and Holly Hutchinson of Old Dominion, 8-4, on Saturday.

The Anteaters duo will face Evangeline Crist and Anna Dollar of Liberty University on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UCLA 11, UC Irvine 0

LOS ANGELES — The visiting Anteaters had 11 shots saved by Bruins goalies in the nonconference game Saturday.

No. 1-ranked UCLA improved to 16-0 and has won 49 straight, one shy of its school record.

No. 13-ranked UCI fell to 7-6.

UCI plays host to USC on Oct. 9
