College Roundup: Vanguard women’s soccer falls in NAIA quarterfinals

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — A Vanguard University defense that had yielded just three goals in its previous 19 games, was bested by arguably the hottest scorer in the nation on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Tournament at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

Bethany Balcer, who had seven goals in her previous three games and 29 goals on the season coming in, found the back of the net in the 20th minute to end the Lions’ season.

No. 7-ranked Vanguard (18-4) equaled its deepest run into the NAIA Tournament and matched a school single-season record for victories.

The Lions entered with 16 shutouts, but the Michigan-based No. 1 seed and defending national champion posted its 18th shutout of the season to improve to 21-0-1.

Madison Lopp and Rayven Hernandez had two shots apiece for Vanguard, which was bested, 15-7, in shots.

Haley Magana had three saves for Vanguard, while Ashley Trimmons made two to earn the clean sheet.

Vanguard had just two shots on goal, half as many as Spring Arbor.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 58, Santa Clara 55

SANTA CLARA — Ioannis Dimakopoulos had 15 points and John Edgar Jr. came off the bench to add a career-high 13 to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Wednesday.

Edgar made five of six field-goal attempts in 17 minutes, while Dimakopoulos was seven for 12 from the field.

UCI (4-4) shot 54.5% from the field (24 for 44, including six for 10 from three-point range, to overcome a 17-5 turnover deficit to the Broncos (3-5).

Jonathan Galloway had eight rebounds and five points to help UCI post a 36-24 advantage on the glass.

UCI visits Arizona on Tuesday.

East Tennessee State 72, UC Irvine 66

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. —Ioannis Dimakopoulos had a career-high 21 points and Jaron Martin added 19 for the Anteaters in the Sanford Pentagon Showcase on Sunday.

Dimakopoulos, a 7-foot-2 senior, was three for five from three-point range to finish seven for 14 from the field. He also had a career-best nine rebounds.

Martin added five assists and was named to the all-tournament team.

Freshman Tommy Rutherford had nine points and six rebounds for UCI.

East Tennessee State improved to 5-1.

Vanguard 91, Shepherd 67

The host Lions improved to 6-0 behind 20 points and eight rebounds from junior Jamaal Lee in the nonconference game on Saturday.

Lee, a transfer from Orange Coast College, made 10 of 12 field-goal attempts in 17 minutes.

Victor Evans had 11 points for the winners, for whom Brandon Hood had seven assists and six points.

Shepherd fell to 3-5.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Fresno State 63, UC Irvine 45

LOS ANGELES — Senior Shareen Sutherland had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Anteaters in the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday at LMU.

UCI (0-6) played without starters Mckenzie Piper and Teirra Hicks.

Sabrina Engelstad had 10 points for the Anteaters.

Fresno State improved to 3-2.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. North Texas

The host Anteaters wrapped up their season with a 22-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 nonconference win on Saturday.

Senior middle blocker Danielle Gieger had a match-high 16 kills and hit .483, while adding four block assists.

Senior libero Arden Davis had a season-best 24 digs, while senior setter Shelley Anderson had 47 assists and 14 digs.

UCI finished 13-18.

North Texas is 13-19.
