College Roundup: Hiura shines in UCI baseball win

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 7, San Diego State 5

Keston Hiura was three for three with two doubles, a solo home run and three runs batted in to lead the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Mikey Duarte was two for four with one RBI and Adam Alcantara drove in two runs and extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Freshman Cole Spear started and went four innings to earn the win and senior Calvin Faucher worked a perfect ninth for his second save.

UCI improved to 2-1.

UC Irvine 7, Minnesota 5

The host Anteaters scored six in the third to erase a 2-0 deficit in the nonconference game Sunday.

Adam Alcantara as two for five with two runs batted in and starting pitcher Louis Raymond earned the win.

Mikey Duarte and Alex Guenette had two hits apiece and Parker Coss had two RBIs for the winners.

Doubleheader

Orange Coast College earned a split in nonconference action Tuesday at OCC.

The Pirates topped Palomar, 8-7, in the conclusion of an earlier game suspended after eight innings due to darkness.

OCC tied the scored one run to pull even, 6-6, in the ninth, then scored two in the 12th and held on.

Ryan Randel pitched four innings to earn the win.

J.T Navarro had a sacrifice fly to plate the go-ahead run in the 12th and OCC tacked on with a bases-loaded walk.

In the second game Tuesday, Palomar won, 13-4.

Ramiro Velasco had a solo home run to highlight the Pirates’ four-hit attack.

OCC is 10-2.

Doubleheader

PALM DESERT — Visiting Orange Coast College lost, 5-4, in a seven-inning opening game, then earned an 19-1 victory to earn the nonconference split on Monday.

Eric Wagaman hit a three-run homer for OCC in the loss.

Additional stats were not available.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 87, Westmont 72

Idrid Teslum scored 19 points to help the host Lions upset the No. 16-ranked Warriors in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Tuesday.

Teslum made all eight field-goal attempts to help Vanguard (7-22, 5-10 in conference) shoot 58.8% from the field (30 for 51).

Westmont fell to 22-6, 10-5.
