College Roundup: UCI men’s volleyball outlasts UCLA

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UCLA

The No. 7-ranked Anteaters outlasted the visiting No. 6-ranked Bruins, 25-23, 28-26, 22-25, 21-25, 17-15, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday.

Tamir Hershko had 23 kills and hit .438 to lead UCI (10-5, 7-4 in conference).

Thomas Hodges (18 kills), Michael Saeta (52 assists) and Aaron Koubi (11 kills, 10 digs and two aces) also helped the Anteaters.

UCLA, coached by former UCI head man John Speraw, fell to 10-7, 7-6.

Orange Coast def. San Diego Mesa

SAN DIEGO — Colby Elder had 22 assists to lead the visiting Pirates to a 25-22, 25-19, 25-16 nonconference sweep on Friday.

Jordan Hoppe (11 kills and eight digs), Matt Ujkic (eight kills), Justin Kam (seven kills) also contributed for OCC (6-1).

OCC middle blockers Chris Orem and Brad Hankus combined for eight kills on 10 attempts with no errors.

OCC plays host to Palomar on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BASEBALL

Vanguard 4, San Diego Christian 3

Brandon Sandoval went four for four to lead the host Lions in the opener of a three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series on Friday.

Trai Patrick was two for four with one run batted in and Jacob Leal hit a solo homer for Vanguard (11-7, 6-1 in conference).

Monty McCasland pitched seven strong innings to earn the win, while Jake Mellenthin notched his fourth save.

Oregon 11, UC Irvine 5

SAN DIEGO — Senior Mikey Duarte hit his first career homer and added two runs batted in, while Keston Hiura homered with two RBIs for the Anteaters in the Tony Gwynn Classic on Friday at the University of San Diego.

Adam Alcantara doubled to extend his hitting streak to 21 games for UCI (3-2), which had five hits.

Oregon is 3-2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Palomar 80, Orange Coast 77

SAN MARCOS — The visiting No. 12-seeded Pirates led, 60-59, through three quarters in the Southern California Regional first-round playoff game Friday.

Danielle Obong (19 points) Sarah Nunes (18) and Chyann Pendergrass (17 points and six rebounds) led the Pirates (17-14), who lost three lopsided decisions to No. 5-seeded Palomar in the regular season.

The Comets (26-2) have now won 18 in a row.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 14, San Diego State 10

Kelsey Thornton scored four goals and Mary Brooks added three to lead the Anteaters in the first round of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Friday at UCI.

No. 6-ranked UCI (8-4) continues the tournament on Saturday against No. 3-ranked UCLA at 11:15 a.m. at UCI.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept Benedictine-Mesa, winning the first game, 8-7, then cruising to a 9-1 win in Game 2 in nonconference play Friday.

Summer Penner had a walk-off single to drive in a run and cap a two-run rally in the opener, in which Britany Heinle was three for four with two RBIs and Payton Ross was two for four.

In the second game, Taylor Wilson, Penner and Heinle were all two for three with one RBI, while Samantha Shaffer had two RBIs.

Courtney Thornhill allowed six hits and one run in five innings to earn the win for Vanguard (9-1).

Benedictine-Mesa is 1-3.

Cypress 10, Orange Coast 2

Nala Osorio and Cayla Ezelle each had one hit and one run batted in for the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

OCC is 2-6, 0-3 in conference.

Cypress is 8-0, 3-0.
