College Roundup: UCI baseball swept by Houston

Houston 7, UC Irvine 3

Keston Hiura was two for two with two walks, two runs and one run batted in for the host Anteaters in the finale of the nonconference series on Sunday.

It was the first time since Baylor in 2003 that a team swept UCI in a nonconference home series.

Cole Kreuter and Jake Hazard were both one for four with one RBI for UCI.

Houston improved to 18-5.

Cypress 6, Golden West 5

CYPRESS – The visiting Rustlers led, 5-2, after six innings, but the Chargers scored two in the seventh, one in the ninth and one in the 10th to win the Orange Empire Conference game on Tuesday.

Nick Tingrides (two stolen bases), Chris Rodriguez (one), Louie Canjura (one), Justin Marquez and Jake Hinzo all had two hits for the Rustlers (13-12, 5-5 in conference).

With the win, Cypress (18-8, 5-5) joins Golden West and Saddleback in a tie for third place.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Vanguard University swept Williams College in nonconference play on Monday.

The No. 17-ranked Lions won the first game, 2-1, and prevailed, 5-1, in Game 2 to improve to 34-8.

Taylor Wilson was two for four, including the walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Payton Ross was two for two and Kolbi Tonini pitched a complete game to earn the win and improve to 6-2.

In the second game, Vanessa Dwyer earned her fifth straight complete-game victory to improve to 15-3.

Kaitlin Estes was two for two with two RBIs, while Cassie Balswick was two for three and Morgan Pilbin was one for two with one RBI.

Williams is 7-7.

MEN’S CREW

Hosts Orange Coast College won three of four races in a dual meet with UCLA on Saturday in Newport Harbor.

OCC won the varsity eight (five minutes, 56.3 seconds over 2,000 meters), the varsity four (7:06), and the novice eight (6:09) races in commanding fashion.

The Pirates will compete at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday.
