Estancia can’t keep up with Sunny Hills

BUENA PARK — Estancia was undermanned and overmatched against host Sunny Hills in a nonleague game played Friday at Buena Park High School.

The Lancers scored four first-quarter touchdowns and led by 50 at halftime on their way to a 64-14 rout of the Eagles.

“They were bigger, faster and stronger,” Estancia Coach Mike Bargas said. “We made some mistakes and they just steamrolled us.”

After winning the season opener, the Eagles (1-4) finished the nonleague portion of their schedule on a four-game losing streak.

Sunny Hills (4-1) racked up 379 yards rushing by halftime, mostly due to the running of Alex Jung, who ran for 201 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries.

The Lancers scored touchdowns on their first six possessions and never had a drive last longer than five plays in any of them.

Estancia punted on the game’s opening drive and the Lancers’ first play from scrimmage was a 63-yard touchdown run from Brandon Castello.

On their second drive, the Lancers drove 80 yards on five plays, with Jung scoring on an 11-yard run to make the score 16-0.

On the ensuing drive, Castello returned an interception for a 42-yard touchdown and the Lancers rounded out a 30-point first quarter with another 11-yard touchdown run from Jung.

The Lancers were ahead 50-0 at halftime, prompting the second half to be played with a running clock.

The Eagles avoided the shutout with an a 12-yard touchdown run by quarterback Eric Carrasco.

The touchdown capped an 80-yard, 10-play scoring drive in which Carrasco completed four of six passes and ran three times for 28 yards.

Carrasco then connected with Hayden Pearce for a 50-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Carrasco completed 14 of 25 passes for 163 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Estancia begins play in the Orange Coast League against Saddleback on Oct. 7.

Saddleback was defeated by Los Amigos, 33-14, on Thursday and finished its nonleague schedule at 2-3

Injuries have taken their toll on the Estancia roster, which was low in numbers to begin with, Bargas said.

“This is what I call a character builder,” Bargas said. “We have great kids and they fought to the end.”
