Baseball dinner features Mayne

Brent Mayne, a former Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College baseball standout who was a Major League Baseball catcher for 15 years, is among five Diamond Club honorees to be featured during a special dinner on Jan. 21 at the Newport Harbor Elks Lodge.

Mayne, a Los Angeles Dodgers scout, is sure to be among several highlights as the Sunset League vs. Trinity League Baseball Challenge and the Newport Elks Baseball Tournament have joined forces to present the First Pitch Baseball Dinner.

The theme for the evening will be “A Night of Baseball Tales and Fun.” The event begins at 6 p.m. and the dinner will start at 7 p.m.

The First Pitch Baseball Dinner will also feature three speakers, including: TJ Bruce, the University of Nevada coach and a Bellfower St. John Bosco graduate; Jay Johnson, coach of Arizona, a 2016 College World Series finalist; and Scott Pickler, a co-coach at Cypress College, a five-time California Junior College champions.

In addition to Mayne, there will be four more honored for Diamond Club status of the event, including: Mike Curran, the former Esperanza coach and a three-time CIF champion; Dave Demarest, the former La Quinta coach and a three-time CIF champion, Phil Nevin, a former 12-year MLB player, and current third-base coach for the San Francisco Giants; and Paul Renfrow, the former Paramount and Marina High coach, and a two-time CIF champion.

The cost for the dinner is $90 per person. A table of 10, receives a $100 discount ($800 total).

The attire for the evening is business casual.

The Sunset League vs. Trinity League Baseball Challenge and Newport Elks Baseball Tournament will showcase over 80 of the best public and private high school teams in Southern California.

This is the second year for the Sunset League vs. Trinity League Baseball Challenge, which features six games against each other.

Santa Margarita at Los Alamitos, 10 a.m.

Servite at Fountain Valley, 10 a.m.

Jan. 27

St. John Bosco at Huntington Beach, 2:45 p.m.

Feb. 1

Orange Lutheran at Edison, 3 p.m.

Feb. 4

Mater Dei at Newport Harbor, 1 p.m.

Feb. 15

Marina at JSerra, 5:30 p.m.

Three out of the last four section championship games in the top division have featured two Sunset League teams, Huntington Beach in 2015, and Marina in 2013, and from the Trinity League, Santa Margarita in 2014. The Oilers and Eagles won titles.
