TRACK AND FIELD

Edison’s Chadwick Vaults To Top

Just days after he was among an all-area final four in the boys’ pole vault competition at the Beach Cities Invitational, Edison’s Michael Chadwick was at it again.

Believe it or not, these opportunities come up a lot with the competition that the Sunset League presents in the event.

Chadwick placed third in the event over the weekend. Two league rivals placed second and fourth, with Sage Hill’s Alex Escalera taking Saturday’s round with a lifetime best mark of 15-10.

Not that it’s in his character to do so, but Escalera will no longer be gloating. His throne as the area’s top pole vaulter on the year has just been seized.

Chadwick jumped 16 feet in a tri-meet on Wednesday, providing the highlight of the day for the host school.

The senior’s personal best mark vaults him into a tie for the No. 2 spot in the state. He is now even with Pleasant Hill College Park’s Noah Hurley.

Redondo’s Tate Curran is head and shoulders above the rest. The state leader has jumped 17-0 3/4 this year…

Marina’s Kyle Tsu and Cooper Malerstein swept the throws and the sprints, respectively, in the boys’ meet at Edison High.

Brothers Alekos (1,600) and Lars Mitchell (3,200) each recorded a distance victory for Huntington Beach…

As for the girls, Amanda Herrington continued to pace the field. She won both hurdles races for Edison. Her teammate, Hannah Hooper, swept the varsity distance heats, while the Chargers also proved lethal in the relays.

Junior Bree Smentkowski won the 200 and the long jump for Huntington Beach.

Marina’s Shayla Mizukami won both throwing events.
