Briefs: Hughes adds title

Costa Mesa resident Sara Hughes’ impressive summer of beach volleyball continued when she and partner Kelly Claes won the NORCECA Continental Tour event in North Bay, Ontario, Canada on July 4.

Hughes and Claes, who as juniors helped USC win the inaugural NCAA beach volleyball title, then had two top-three finishes on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tour, defeated Canada’s Brandie Wilkerson and Julie Gordon, 21-16, 21-13, in the final.

Hughes and Claes, seeded No. 7, lost to top-seeded Wilkerson and Gordon, 22-20, 21-12, in pool play.

The Americans bounced back to top a No. 3-seeded Canadian duo of Camille Saxton and Rachel Cockrell, 21-14, 21-10, in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Hughes and Claes defeated the No. 2-seeded American duo of Kelly Reeves and Ali McCulloch, 19-21, 21-14, 20-18.

Shin on a roll

UC Irvine product John Chin turned in his second straight solid showing on the Canadian Tour with a 19th-place finish in the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open that concluded on June 26 at the Dakota Dunes Golf Links in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The 2010 All-American finished with a 72-hole total of 12-under-par 276 (67-68-73-68).

Max Rottluff was the tournament champion (265).

Chin, a three-time Big West Conference Player of the Year, placed fourth in the Golf BC Championship with a four-round score of 15-under 269 at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf and Country Club in Kelowna, British Columbia, June 9-12.

Chin currently ranks 15th this season on the Mackenzie Tour.

As a senior at UCI, Chin ranked No. 1 in the final 2010 Golfstat Cup with a 70.05 scoring average, and he won four tournaments.

Chin was a 2010 Golfweek and PING first-team All-American and was named to the 2010 All-Nicklaus team.

He was a two-time medalist at the Big West Championship, including 2010 when he won the 54-hole tournament by nine shots.

Chin was a member of the 2010 United States Palmer Cup team that defeated Europe, 13-11, in Northern Ireland.

OCC volleyball camps coming

Orange Coast College men’s volleyball assistant coach Scott Panaro will conduct three separate sessions of youth and high school camps for boys and girls beginning in late July.

Participants at all ability levels will receive instruction in basic fundamentals and strategies of volleyball.

Youth sessions, for kids ages 7-14, are July 25-29, Aug. 1-5 and Aug. 8-12 in OCC’s Fitness Complex Gym, with each day running from 9 a.m. to noon.

The cost for one week is $175, $150 for those who sign up for more than one session, or enroll more than one child in the same family.

The high school camps, which run from 1-4 p.m on the same dates as the youth camps, are for incoming freshman through seniors. These camps are geared toward those already competing at the school or club level.

High school training will include instruction in individual positions, as well as the team format.

Athletes will be grouped based on their age, gender, skill level and ability.
