Locals chosen All-OCL

Estancia High senior Connor Brown and junior Colin Gardner, along with Costa Mesa senior Grady Conner and junior Dylan Schafer are first-team All-Orange Coast League honorees in baseball.

Brown and Gardner led the Eagles (17-13, 8-7 in league) to a third-place finish and a berth in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

Conner and Schafer helped the Mustangs (10-17, 6-9) to a share of fourth place.

Estancia lost at Sonora, 8-0, in a wild-card game.

Brown, a right-handed pitcher, had a 7-2 record with a 1.23 earned-run average, fanning 73 in 57 innings. He tossed four complete games.

Brown, who made the first team for the third time, batted .303 with 13 runs batted in to go with five doubles, one triple and 11 runs.

Gardner, a first baseman and third baseman, hit .352 with one home run and 13 RBIs. He produced seven doubles, one triple and 25 runs.

Conner, a three-time first-team selection, hit .444 with four home runs and 28 RBIs. He had a .792 slugging percentage and a .592 on-base percentage.

The Vanguard University-bound Conner doubled 11 times, scored 28 runs and stole 24 bases.

Schafer, a right fielder, batted .511 with five doubles and 20 runs. He had a .542 on-base percentage.

The locals on the second team were Estancia junior center fielder Jeff Alai and sophomore shortstop Brian Rodriguez, as well as Costa Mesa senior pitcher Ryan Lether and junior third baseman Carter Chapman.

Laguna Beach’s Will McInerny was named Orange Coast League MVP.

Mikulak joinselite company

Corona del Mar High product Sam Mikulak, who became the first man in more than 15 years to win four straight all-around gymnastics national championships in June, is one of six nominees for United States Sports Academy Male Athlete of the Month for June.

Mikulak, who will compete in his second Olympic Games next month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after winning the all-around title at the U.S Trials, will be considered along with NBA Finals MVP LeBron James, golfer Justin Johnson, tennis star Novak Dkokovic, baseball player Andrew Beckwith, and track and field standout Jarrion Lawson.

Voting conducted online ended Thursday and the winner will be announced soon on the United States Sports Academy website — www.ussa.edu — and other social media outlets.

MMA event scheduled Sunday

Summer Fist IX, a mixed marshall arts show featuring 10 bouts, will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa.

The event, offered by Roy Englebrecht Promotions, features adult amateur MMA talent, as well as youth bouts from the United States Fight League.

Tickets, which include admission to the fair, are $30, $22.50 and $15 and can be purchased at the Fair & Event Center Box Office.
