Team USA fifth

The U.S. men’s national team finished fifth in the Federation Internationale de Volleyball World League in which its road came to an end Friday in Krakow, Poland.

Team USA, including UC Irvine product David Smith, a 6-foot-7 middle blocker, lost to Brazil, 24-26, 21-25, 28-26, 25-21, 15-12, for the right to advance to the semifinals on Friday.

The United States knew going into Friday’s match that it needed three points to beat Italy and make the semifinals. To achieve that, it had to sweep or win in four games against Brazil.

Team USA also lost to Italy, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23, on July 14. The U.S. squad finished 8-3 in World League matches.

“We’re going to have to take this break before the Olympic Games and evaluate, regroup and train as hard as we can to come back and play at a level we have been at the last two summers,” said U.S. Coach John Speraw, formerly the coach at UCI.
