Angels sign Ex-Pirate Kruger

Jack Kruger, a catcher who helped Orange Coast College win the 2015 state baseball championship, signed Friday for $395,000 with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Kruger, drafted in the 20th round by the Angels (No. 606 overall) in June, played one season at Mississippi State, helping the Bulldogs win their first Southeastern Conference title since 1989.

He was a first-team All-SEC honoree at designated hitter-utility after hitting .344 with eight home runs, 40 runs batted in and six stolen bases.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder hit .310 with 23 RBIs at OCC, at which he played just one season.

He began his collegiate career at Oregon.

Locals ousted atAVP tournament

Costa Mesa resident Jennifer Fopma and former UC Irvine standout Whitney Pavlik were eliminated in the contender’s bracket on Saturday at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Manhattan Beach Open near the Manhattan Beach Pier.

Fopma and Jennifer Kessy, the No. 4 seeds, lost in the third round of the main draw, 23-21, 21-19, to No. 5-seeded Angela Bensend and Geena Urango.

After one win in the contender’s bracket, Fopma and Kessy lost, 21-15, 22-24, 19-17, to No. 9-seeded Sheila Shaw and Emily Stockman.

Pavlik and Amanda Dowdy, the No. 7 seeds, lost to No. 2-seeded Kim DiCello and Kendra VanZwieten, 21-14, 21-19, to fall into the contender’s bracket.

After a win, Pavlik and Dowdy lost to No. 6-seeded Brittany Hochevar and Emily Day, 21-14, 21-14.

Both Fopma and Pavlik finish seventh and split $4,400 with their partners.
