CIF-SS Track and Field Masters Meet moves

One new thing deserves another.

Just as the postseason saw a change when the CIF Southern Section moved the cross-country championships to the Riverside City Cross-Country Course this past season, another move will take place in track and field.

The CIF Southern Section office announced on Tuesday that the CIF-SS Track and Field Masters Meet will be relocated to Arcadia High School for this season.

“We are excited to announce that Arcadia High School will be the host of the CIF-SS Masters Meet in 2017,” CIF Assistant Commissioner Rainer Wulf said in a press release.

“Arcadia High School has a long history of running first class track and field events over the years and we feel that this will be an excellent venue for our CIF-SS schools and athletes as they run to qualify for the CIF State meet.”

Cerritos College has hosted the meet on and off since 1963. The turf is being redone, and the date of construction will force the Masters Meet to be moved. It will not affect the CIF-SS Preliminaries and Finals.

Arcadia High hosts the Arcadia Invitational, a national-level competition. While some feel that the area’s best athletes are coming home, CIF-SS Director of Communications Thom Simmons says that wasn’t a consideration in the decision.

“We were looking for the next best available facility that could host that event and checked off all the boxes that we need for hosting an event,” Simmons said. “With the available spaces around Southern California, we felt that Arcadia was the best with those issues and concerns.”

Among the concerns that needed to be addressed were ample parking, sufficient seating, an athlete warmup area, and proper concessions to feed a capacity crowd.

The CIF-SS Masters Meet will be held on Friday, May 26.
