Kanoa Igarashi of Huntington Beach, the hometown kid, winning the men’s title at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing was no doubt a good story.

But Sage Erickson’s victory in the women’s division also was a breakthrough accomplishment Sunday on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

It was the first World Surf League Championship Tour win for Erickson, of Ventura. She beat defending champion Tatiana Weston-Webb in the final, 11.84 points to 9.80, to win the final.

Weston-Webb led for much of the finals heat, before Erickson broke off a big score of 6.67 with less than three minutes remaining that helped her earn the victory.

Erickson, 26, moves from No. 9 to No. 6 on the Championship Tour leaderboard. In the semifinals, she bested local favorite Courtney Conlogue (Santa Ana/Sage Hill School), 13.33 points to 11.46.

Conlogue had beaten Erickson a weekend earlier in the final of the Supergirl Pro event in Oceanside, but this time Erickson moved on.

Also Sunday in Huntington Beach, the inaugural Vans BMX Pro Cup World Championships closed out, and Larry Edgar of Corona was crowned BMX Pro Cup World Champion. Edgar finished second in Surf City, bumping up his overall ranking to edge out former leader Sergio Layos.

Dennis Enarson took first place in BMX in Huntington Beach, also earning the Best Line Award. Kevin Peraza placed third.

On Saturday in skateboarding, Tom Schaar of Cardiff won the Vans Park Series Men’s Pro Tour title. It was Schaar’s second podium win of the season and he remains on top in the VPS Challenger Rankings. Ben Hatchell placed second, and CJ Collins was third.
