Around Town: Italian festival will celebrate autumn at Pelican Hill

The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach will offer a taste of Italy this weekend during its sixth annual Festa dell’Autunno, or Autumn Festival.

From 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, chef Marco Criscuolo and guest chef Filippo Gozzoli from the Armani Hotel Milano will present an autumn-inspired multicourse dinner with Italian wine pairings at the resort’s Andrea Ristorante.

The cost is $225 per person.

An Italian Street Festa from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday will offer Italian food and wine, live music and dancing, traditional art, a mercato, auto exhibits, bocce ball and traditional flag performances.

The cost is $150 per adult.

And on Sunday, an Under the California Sun jazz brunch will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for $125 per adult and $50 per child ages 4-12.

Arts marketing workshop on tap

The city of Laguna Beach and the National Arts Marketing Project will hold a free marketing workshop for arts organizations at City Hall on Friday.

Diane Wyenn, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s former marketing director, will lead the session, titled “Not All Marketing Dollars Are Created Equal … And That’s Okay.”

Car show on Huntington’s Main Street on Saturday

HB Car Club will present its first Main Street Cars & Cruise Car Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in downtown Huntington Beach.

The show, featuring pre-1972 American hot rod, custom, muscle, classic and vintage cars, also will offer live music, vendors and specials from Main Street retailers and restaurants.

Extra DUI patrol scheduled in Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach police officers will watch for motorists impaired by drugs or alcohol during a DUI saturation patrol from 9 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday.

Officers will be stationed in areas of previous DUI-related collisions and arrests, according to a news release.

Recent national statistics show that 30% of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their system, the release said.

Police remind residents that they should designate a sober driver or call a cab.

Newport Beach pageants taking sign-ups

Registration for the Miss Newport Beach, Miss Corona del Mar and other Newport Beach pageants is open through Oct.15.

The pageants will be held Oct.23 at the Port Theater in Corona del Mar.

Contestants for Miss Newport Beach and Miss Corona del Mar must be between the ages of 19 and 28.

Several other pageants, including Miss Angel Newport Beach for ages 3 to 5 and Ambassador Newport Beach and Ambassador Corona del Mar for ages 55 and over also are open for sign-ups.

Costa Mesa High to hold ceremony for new field

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Costa Mesa High School’s new Mustangs Field will be held at 5p.m. Oct.14 before the school’s homecoming football game at 7p.m.

Costa Mesa High School is at 2650 Fairview Road.

Group launches vodcast on children’s issues

Costa Mesa-based Project Hope Alliance has joined Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County and THINK Together in launching “Our Kids,” a monthly vodcast series featuring conversations on issues facing children, according to a news release.

Project Hope Alliance’s chief executive, Jennifer Friend, will be among a group that discusses the topics.

The online videos are available on the website of the UC Irvine Blum Center for Poverty Alleviation, blumcenter.uci.edu/connect/media, the second week of every month.
