Around Town: Huntington Beach to ‘Light a Light of Love’ on Dec. 4

The 20th annual “Light a Light of Love” holiday charity fundraiser in Huntington Beach will feature a children’s parade, entertainment, a Taste of Main Street, a meet-and-greet with Santa Claus and giant lighted snowflakes.

The program is scheduled for 2:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at Huntington Beach Pier Plaza, where Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway meet.

The lighting of more than 80 6-foot-tall snowflakes will begin at 6 p.m.

Proceeds from snowflake sponsorships will go to Community Service Programs’ Huntington Beach Youth Shelter.

Children can hear from Santa by sending letters to Crown Ace Hardware locations

Crown Ace Hardware locations in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach will host their fourth year of the Letters to Santa program, in which children can write to St. Nick by Dec. 1 and receive a response from the North Pole.

Each location will have its own North Pole Express Mailbox for the letters, and postage will be paid by Crown.

“Last year, Santa wrote back to over 600 children who sent letters from our stores,” Becca Kaplan, Crown marketing and buying coordinator, said in a statement. “Our Letters to Santa program has always been a giant success.”

H.B. Central Library to host annual tree decorating party and puppet show

The Huntington Beach Central Library will host its annual tree decorating party and puppet show on Dec. 3.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the library, 7111 Talbert Ave.

Children will be able to make holiday ornaments, watch the “Wacky Winter Adventure” puppet show and snap a photo with Santa Claus.

Tickets can be purchased for $4 at the Children’s Library information desk.

Fair Trade items to be featured at Harbor Christian Church

Harbor Christian Church in Newport Beach will hold its fifth annual Fair Trade event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 3-4.

Each year, the event focuses on helping producers from developing countries market their items such as handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, cotton, wine, flowers and gold.

Over $65,000 raised for Girls Inc. at Newport Beach event

Girls Inc. of Orange County’s inaugural Champions for Girls Luncheon last week at the Newport Beach Country Club raised more than $65,000 for Girls Inc. programs, organizers said.

The event, hosted by philanthropists Gena Reed of Corona del Mar, Sue Stern of Newport Beach and Pam Policano of Irvine, welcomed more than 200 guests.

Laguna Art Museum honors longtime art collector

The Laguna Art Museum honored art collector Yvonne Boseker with the Wendt Award last week for her support and appreciation for California art.

The museum’s executive director, Malcolm Warner, presented the award during a dinner in Laguna Beach.

Boseker began collecting art many years ago and encourages art conservation efforts, according to a news release.

Center Club to host Holiday Casino Night to aid female business owners

The Orange County chapter of the National Assn. for Women Business Owners will hold a Holiday Casino Night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Center Club, 650 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Women’s Business Institute, which provides educational scholarships to female business owners looking to gain skills through their workshops, seminars and college courses.

Pacific City to present holiday movie nights

The Pacific City shopping center in Huntington Beach will host three free holiday movie nights in December at the movie screen on Level 2 near Smocking Birds.

“Elf” will be featured Dec. 7, followed by “A Christmas Story” on the 14th and the Jim Carrey version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on the 21st.

Each movie will start at 7 p.m., but visitors are welcome to arrive early.

Huntington Beach ceremony to honor the fallen of Pearl Harbor

Those killed at Pearl Harbor will be honored at a ceremony at 2 p.m. Dec. 7 — the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack that brought the United States into World War II — at the veterans memorial at Huntington Beach City Hall, 2000 Main St.

The city of Huntington Beach and American Legion Post 133 are teaming up on the event to “remember and honor those lost 75 years ago in the fateful attack on Pearl Harbor.”

H.B. Academy for Performing Arts collects toys for children

The Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts is collecting toys for needy children until Dec. 9.

People can take unwrapped gifts to a donation box at the academy office at Huntington Beach High School, 1905 Main St., or the Huntington Beach Union High School District office, 5832 Bolsa Ave.

The charity event is backed by the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

“We’re busy all year long, but this is our time to slow down, reflect on what matters most and make someone’s day that much brighter,” APA supervisor Susan West said in a statement.

Mika in Costa Mesa to hold holiday activities

As the holiday season rolls in, Costa Mesa community development organization Mika is accepting gift card donations worth up to $25 for those in need and has scheduled a Christmas party for Dec. 10.

Mika will take donated gift cards by mail or in person at its office at 1718 Monrovia Ave., Costa Mesa.

The party will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at The Crossing Church, 2115 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa.

H.B. Concert Band schedules holiday show

The Huntington Beach Concert Band will hold a “Sacred and Secular Sounds of the Season” concert Dec. 10.

The show will start at 7:30 p.m. at St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church, 18631 Chapel Lane.

Shoes being collected to help fight global poverty

Newport Beach-based Johnson Attorneys Group has launched a shoe drive through New Year’s Day to collect at least 500 pairs of footwear to help the poor.

During its first shoe drive last year, the personal-injury law firm collected nearly 300 pairs.

Used and new shoes can be dropped off at firm’s offices at 4440 Von Karman Ave., Suite 120, Newport Beach.

The donated shoes will be delivered to Soles4Souls, a not-for-profit enterprise that distributes shoes and clothing to needy people worldwide.
