Around Town: Alzheimer’s Walk on Saturday in Huntington Beach

Thousands of people are expected to walk in Huntington Beach on Saturday to raise money and awareness to help fight Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Since becoming an independent organization last December, Walk4ALZ, presented by Alzheimer’s Orange County, has raised more than $1 million for Alzheimer’s patient support and services, officials said.

The Huntington Beach walk will begin at 21500 Pacific Coast Hwy., with registration at 7:30 a.m. An opening ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m., and the walk at 9.

Complimentary parking and transportation will be available at First Christian Church of Huntington Beach, 1207 Main St. Once those spots are filled, people can park in the Huntington State Beach parking lot between First Street and Beach Boulevard for $15.

The walk is free, but participants must register as an individual or part of a team to raise funds for the cause.

OCC to host household hazardous-waste collection Saturday

The Costa Mesa Sanitary District and Orange Coast College, in collaboration with OC Waste & Recycling, will hold a free household hazardous-waste collection event Saturday for residents to safely dispose of items that can’t be put in a household trash bin.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Parking Lot C at Orange Coast College, 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa.

Items that can be dropped off include used oil, household batteries, cleaning and automotive products, paint, pesticides and other kinds of household chemicals.

Food drive continues in Fountain Valley

Coastline Orthopaedic Associates in Fountain Valley, in partnership with national nonprofit Move for Hunger, is holding a Thanksgiving food drive until Nov. 21 at 11160 Warner Ave., Suite 311, Fountain Valley.

Donors can contribute nonperishable foods such as stuffing mix, cranberry sauce and canned vegetables.

Reid Day School to host medical officer

Reid Day School in Costa Mesa will host a presentation and Q&A from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with Marc Lerner, a medical officer with the Orange County Department of Education.

Reid is for students who are considered twice-exceptional, meaning they are gifted and have a learning, emotional or behavioral issue.

Lerner will talk about the social and emotional needs of such students.

Author’s Luncheon in H.B. to feature Vietnam vet

The Huntington Beach Central Library will hold an Author’s Luncheon on Thursday with Vietnam veteran and author Frank Pangborn.

Lunch will be at noon for $25, followed by a program at 1 p.m. for $12 in which guests can learn about U.S. military history, starting with the Revolutionary War.

Village View Elementary gets new principal

The Ocean View School District announced that Francesca Ligman has been appointed principal of Village View Elementary School in Huntington Beach.

Ligman began her career in public education 20 years ago as a teacher at the school and was its interim principal at the start of this school year.

“Mrs. Ligman has demonstrated a commitment to building consistency and growth in the Ocean View School District,” Supt. Carol Hansen said in a statement. “I have been impressed with the enthusiasm and strong leadership she has provided in just a short time.”

Newport woman named a director for senior services nonprofit

Newport Beach resident Martha Farrington has been named director of fund development for Laguna Hills-based nonprofit Age Well Senior Services.

Farrington has held executive positions with various nonprofit organizations over the past 25 years, according to a news release.

She has worked with the South Coast Medical Center Foundation, Riverside Community College Foundation, Hoag Hospital Foundation and USC School of Medicine.

Woman’s Club seeking donated items for December luncheon

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach is seeking donated items such as holiday decorations, jewelry, art, toys and gently worn clothing for its Tarnished Treasures Luncheon and Fundraiser on Dec. 9.

Items will be on sale at the luncheon, with proceeds benefiting needy families in Laguna Beach.

Donations may be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Kinsman & Kinsman office at 32355 S. Coast Hwy., except for Nov. 24 and 25.

Donations also will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and 2 to 5 p.m. Thursdays at the Woman’s Club at 286 St. Ann’s Drive, except for Nov. 24.

The deadline to donate is Dec 8.

Admission to the luncheon is $35 for club members and $40 for nonmembers. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.

Reservations are required by Dec. 4 and may be made at wclb.org/event.
